Nestled within Kirinyaga County, Kamwangi stands as one of two wetmills managed by the esteemed New Ngariama Cooperative Society. Situated on Mount Kenya’s slopes, Kirinyaga is globally recognized for its exceptional coffee quality. Established in 1983, Kamwangi is the Co-op’s second factory, following the original Kainamui. With growing demand for delicious coffees from Kamwangi and Kainamui, the Co-op introduced a third factory, Kiamugumo, to meet increased processing needs.
Kamwangi’s meticulous cultivation includes varietals SL28, SL34, complemented by smaller quantities of Batian and Ruiru 11. Kamwangi Coffee smells like melted butter and has lively hints of strawberry and lime, followed by a refreshing black currant aftertaste. It’s as light and revitalizing as lemonade, offering a unique flavor journey that makes every sip an enjoyable adventure.
Aligned with the growing environmental consciousness, Kamwangi Coffee Factory has taken proactive steps by relocating waste water soak pits, allowing waste water to naturally permeate back into the soil, away from water sources. Also, the factory actively promotes tree planting among its members to contribute to the ecological balance. In harmony with coffee cultivation, banana and maize thrive, accompanied by the nurturing shade of Grevillea or macadamia trees, enhancing the coffee trees’ growth. Emphasizing farmer welfare, the factory offers credit-based farm inputs and cash advances, serving as meaningful incentives. Kamwangi Coffee Factory’s ethos extends beyond coffee, fostering sustainability, ecology, and the well-being of its community.
