Kivubelt Coffee, the owner of Cyiya farm, was founded in 2011 by Furaha Umwizeye Teuscher’s company, Teuscher Invest. After it acquired more than 200 acres of land in Gihombo, it has planted more than 90,000 coffee trees, set up washing stations across multiple districts, and partnered with more than 200 farmers.
The Red Bourbon grown here is fruity and floral. Harvest season is between May and July, after which the cherries are brought to the washing stations where they are hand sorted and floated, then set on suspended beds to dry naturally for 25 to 30 days. During drying, the coffees are constantly raked to ensure uniform moisture content, which improves cup quality. The cherries are sorted and graded by bean size and colour, shape, and density.
