Situated in the picturesque Kirinyaga County, within the central Kenya region, Ngugu-ini Wetmill is a valued member of the Kibirigwi Farmers Co-operative Society and was established in 1958. It boasts of nutrient-rich volcanic soils, enhanced by tree planting alongside coffee bushes and the integration of dairy and poultry farming. Embracing a family-oriented approach, the farms are family-owned, with sizes averaging 1⁄2 – 1 acre, where manual tools are used by family members for farming activities.
Isaura Martinez has owned the plantation Ngugu-ini coffee, named after its wet-mill, unites 1200 farmers, each contributing a few kilos of cherry to form a harmonious harvest. Rooted in the same locality, the coffee maintains consistent attributes. Grown at elevations of 1600-1650 MASL, the cherries are wet-processing, involving 16-24 hours of fermentation, followed by an additional 16-18 hours to enrich cup complexity. Embracing warm temperatures and lower altitudes, the coffee imparts a balanced, smooth cup accentuated by delightful sweet tropical berry notes. Comprising SL 28, SL 34, and Ruiru 11 varietals, these coffees undergo a meticulous full washing process. Taste the embodiment of Ngugu-ini’s dedication in every sip.
